I Is For...#2: Investment worthy pieces

Happy Labour Day Singaporeans! Since it is a public holiday today, I shall recommend some pieces that you should have in your wardrobe. The key is not labels. There's no point in buying a Patek Philippe if you have to starve yourself for 2 months. Just be yourself, and buy classic pieces that can last you a long time. Here are some choices:

1) White Shirt: The versatile white shirt can bring you to most affairs where dressing up is required, namely for work or for dinner dates/events. Try to keep the shirt as plain as possible, although some subtle detailing may work. Most importantly, make sure it fits well. Tailor a few pieces, and get the rest "off-the-shelf" if the size is right. You can also make alterations, sometimes from the place where you made your purchase. I make my shirts from Dreamland Tailor at Peninsula Shopping Centre (Tel: 6338 1784). No relation to the tailor, just that I believe the workmanship is great over there. For OTS shirts, you can try Banana Republic. They provide alterations too.

2) Lightly Coloured Solid Shirts: Same reason as above, just that it would be nice to add some colour to your outfit once in a while. Check out the same Banana Republic shirt in Sky Blue (below left) and Pink (below right). The Sky Blue shirt would go great with a grey suit.

3) Grey Suit: Most people would choose black to be their choice of colour when they want to buy or tailor a suit. Nothing wrong there, as they want to keep their outfit solemn and serious, just like how they would treat their work. However, grey is also another great colour for a suit. It shows that you are serious about your work, but you are also daring and confident, in terms of your choice of colour, and thus may reflect better towards your clients/boss as you would stand out from the crowd. Choose a suit that has subtle details too, such as a pinstripe suit (below left)from Banana Republic, or one that has a light subtle checkered pattern (below right) from Ralph Lauren. Make sure it fits too!

4)Basic T-shirts: Uniqlo has landed in Singapore, and brought along affordable Japanese clothing to Singapore. You can buy their basic tees at 3 for $25. Another alternative is Banana Republic's at $35 per piece, or if you buy during their sale, you can possibly get 2 at $50. Get them in many colours and in crewneck and v-necks as these shirts can be very versatile!

5)Jeans: Get a few pairs of jeans of different shades of blue, and black and white. Darker colours such as dark blue and black may be possible to pull off at work, especially on casual Friday. Lighter shades of blue are more casual, and white can be dressier if worn the right way. Get a few designer ones, such as 7 for all mankind, or you could try the latest Burberry denim line (below). You could also try some lesser known brands (in Singapore) such as Rag&Bone. I bought a pair of white jeans from KnowItNothing at Haji Lane at $150, and it still fits great.

6)Shoe Trees: Read Terence's post on Cedar Shoe Trees here. They retail at Zappos for $29.95. It's hard to find good shoe trees made from cedar wood in Singapore, so I believe they are quite a steal.

Well, with these 6 items fully prepared, you are good to go, and your wardrobe should be able to last longer! Have fun shopping!
